February 2018

posted Feb 13, 2018, 11:07 AM by Alan Strawn   [ updated Feb 14, 2018, 4:47 PM ]

Many changes have taken place in the club since the last update. We went through a period of transition in the membership application process when membership became available once again after a 4-year hiatus and one of our founding members died in November. That’s part of the reason for the delay in updates here.  We'll try to keep this page updated more often in future.

New member applications now must include a sponsor who is already a member, and the applicant must go through an orientation before being brought to vote. Also we now require that applicants participate in two different discipline events before applying to the club for membership.  As of our February meeting we are once again at our limit for new members, but applications are being taken to be held until there are openings again.  By early September there will probably be openings again, so if you have an interest in joining, get started with the process now.

Andy Krantz died on November 10th after a year-long battle with cancer. He was the 2014 Senior World Champion in NRA Action Pistol, a past president of BRRC and one of the key members at BRRC.  His last shooting event was in April of 2017 at the Crawfish Cup in Louisiana which he had planned from the year before to attend no matter what!  He finished 2nd place Senior at that event in a field of 24 Seniors and 10th Overall from a total of 85 shooters. He is greatly missed by all who knew him.

The 2018 shooting season is soon to be upon us with the usual events on the calendar. More may be added as interest indicates, but for now Skeet, Action Pistol, Cowboy Action, Rimfire Steel and Rimfire Benchrest matches are on the calendar with Bullseye Handgun to be added starting in April.

If you have a particular interest in events different from those on our schedule let us know so they can be added providing that we can find a member to run the events. Suggestions are invited. With the membership in flux, people moving away and dropping out or moving into the area and joining, it’s difficult to maintain a steady event schedule without input and participation of the members and the community.

Upcoming events of interest to some members include the Crawfish Cup NRA Action Pistol Regional match at Lake Charles, LA in April, the NRA World Action Pistol Championship Match at Bates City, MO and the Bianchi Cup at Columbia, MO in May.  Several members will participate in those events along with Regional and State Championship NRA Action Pistol events in Chambersburg, PA in July.

Later in the year, some Virginia shooters will be at Cheyenne, WY in August for a Regional and State Championship match in NRA AP and some of our members will fire at the National Pistol & Rifle Championships at Camp Perry and other venues.

Virginia shooters acquitted themselves quite nicely at the 2017 Bianchi Cup, the NRA Action Pistol National Championship event held at Columbia, MO from the 23rd through the 27th of May. They won, respectively, 1st Revolver and 4th Police (Greg Davis), 2nd Senior (Jon Stoehr) and 1st Grand Senior (John Sanders).

In the preliminary scores leading into the Final Colt Shootoff on Saturday, Kevin Angstadt and Greg Davis, both members here at BRRC, and Travis Hayton from Bluefield, VA were in the top 30 out of 179 shooters. Jon Stoehr and John Sanders are from Northern VA and have shot here at our Regional & State Championship events.

April Update

posted Apr 28, 2017, 3:33 AM by Alan Strawn   [ updated Apr 28, 2017, 6:04 PM ]

Four of us went to Lake Charles, LA to shoot in their Regional match, The Crawfish Cup; Andy Krantz, Kevin Angstadt,Ben Boyette and Alan Strawn. Kevin finished second overall behind Bruce Piatt, and Andy finished second in Senior Division.

The Bianchi Cup is this month at Columbia, MO and we’ll be well represented again this year. Numbers are down due to some political issues within the NRA. Dennis Willing, Pistol Coordinator and Damien Orsinger, Action Pistol Coordinator have both resigned and Midway USA is no longer a sponsor of the Cup. Many other sponsors dropped out, not just in AP but in Competitions overall including the National Championship matches that have been held at Camp Perry in the past due to the way NRA has handled sponsorship money.

Monthly update - March 13, 2017

posted Mar 13, 2017, 12:11 PM by Alan Strawn

BRRC no longer hosts 3-Gun matches due to a lack of range personnel.

Entry forms for The Overlord Memorial Cup (Regional NRA Action Pistol Championship) and The Cardinal Cup (VA State NRA Action Pistol Championship) will be posted on the first of May.  Match programs are already posted at the left of the Home Page under "2017 Action Pistol Championships".  Entry forms will be in that same section.

A new "carport" is being installed at the back of the Mover range this month for shade & shelter from rain.

Two new Cowboy matches have been added to the schedule: March 25th and April 29th.  These are Saturday events starting later in the day than the "first Sunday" matches already on the calendar.

The USMC Pistol Team will be visiting our range from March 28th through the 31st for Action Pistol practice, so the lower ranges will be in use and may be a bit crowded during that time frame.  This will not affect the scheduled Skeet match on the 29th.

At least 4 of our members plan to participate in the Crawfish Cup Regional NRA Action Pistol Championship  at Lake Charles, LA in April: Andy Krantz, Kevin Angstadt, Alan Strawn and Ben Boyette.  That 2-day event is the largest Regional AP match in the country with many of the world's top shooters/past Bianchi Cup winners and international participants.  Wish us luck!!

Rimfire Fun!

posted Jan 3, 2017, 11:05 AM by Alan Strawn

On the 3rd Saturday of each month, BRRC is holding a Rimfire Steel Match for Rimfire pistols and rifles.  These matches consist of 3-5 courses of fire (cof) involving the use of rimfire guns on closeup and large targets.  Fun for the whole family.  The cof's involve shooting at steel targets from 10-35 yards.  Each stage will involve shooting at the targets 5 times with the slowest time thrown out.  The other 4 times added together will comprise your score.  All categories of Rimfire rifles & pistols are allowed and compete separately.  Ammo is available for sale @ ~.10 per round if you need ammo.  Contact us for further info.
